Investigators Explore Possible Links Between Las Vegas Bomber and New Orleans Attacker

On New Year’s Day, two horrifying attacks shook the United States, prompting authorities to investigate potential connections between the perpetrators, Matthew Livelsberger and Shamsud Din Jabbar.

In Las Vegas, Livelsberger, a 37-year-old former Army veteran, detonated a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel. The explosion killed Livelsberger but caused no additional casualties. Meanwhile, in New Orleans, Jabbar drove a rented truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing at least 15 people before being fatally shot by police during a confrontation.

Common Backgrounds Raise Questions

Both suspects served in the U.S. Army and were stationed at Fort Bragg at overlapping times. Livelsberger enlisted in 2006 and spent nearly 20 years in the Special Forces, while Jabbar joined in 2007 and served eight years before transitioning to the Army Reserve. Reports indicate they were deployed to Afghanistan during the same period, adding another layer of intrigue to their connection.

Similar Tactics

The attackers also shared a similar method of preparation, each using the car-sharing app Turo to rent the vehicles involved in their crimes. A spokesperson for Turo confirmed that neither individual had a criminal record that would have flagged them as security risks.

The Unanswered Question: Were They Linked?

While their shared military history and similar attack strategies have raised suspicions, authorities caution against premature conclusions. The FBI is investigating whether the men coordinated their actions or were influenced by similar factors independently. Jabbar’s attack is believed to have involved additional collaborators, while Livelsberger’s explosion currently appears to be a solo act.

Personal Struggles and Radicalization

Both men faced personal hardships in their lives. Livelsberger, described as a dedicated Army professional, had recently transitioned to a civilian role. Jabbar’s history includes financial struggles, failed marriages, and a sudden shift toward radicalization.

Ongoing Investigation

The FBI continues to explore digital communications, military connections, and other evidence to determine if these attacks were coordinated. Public officials have emphasized the importance of a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As investigators dig deeper, the question remains: Did these two former soldiers act together, or are these attacks chilling coincidences?
