A powerful winter storm is sweeping across New Jersey, bringing heavy snow, dangerous travel conditions, and a state of emergency declared by Governor Phil Murphy for all 21 counties. Forecasts from the National Weather Service predict up to 8 inches of snow across parts of the state, with the heaviest snowfall expected Sunday afternoon and evening.

State of Emergency Declared in New Jersey

Governor Murphy’s state of emergency went into effect at 8 a.m. Sunday, January 21, 2025, allowing state agencies to mobilize resources to respond to the storm. Residents are advised to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary as the storm intensifies.

Snowfall Forecasts and Winter Storm Warnings

Snow Accumulations:

  • Northern New Jersey, including Sussex County, may see 10 inches of snow in higher elevations.

  • Along the I-95 corridor, areas are expected to receive 6 to 8 inches.

  • South Jersey could see accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, with heavier amounts closer to the Delaware River.

Counties Under Winter Storm Warnings:

  • Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Union, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Mercer, Somerset, and Morris counties are forecasted to receive 4 to 8 inches of snow, with snowfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour during the storm’s peak.

Winter Weather Advisories:

  • Southern counties, including Camden, Gloucester, and Burlington, can expect 3 to 5 inches, with some mixed precipitation before turning to snow.

Travel Hazards and Timing

Snowfall began late Sunday morning and will peak between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., with rates exceeding 1 inch per hour. Roads, bridges, and overpasses will become slick and hazardous, and blowing snow could reduce visibility significantly.

Impact on the NFL Playoffs

The Philadelphia area, just across the border, is expecting 4 to 6 inches of snow, which could affect the NFL playoff game between the Eagles and Los Angeles Rams, scheduled for a 3 p.m. kickoff. Fans attending the game should prepare for challenging travel conditions and sub-freezing temperatures.

Dangerously Cold Temperatures Ahead

After the snow subsides, temperatures in New Jersey will plummet:

  • Monday night through Thursday morning will see highs in the teens and lows in the single digits.

  • Wind chills below zero are expected, increasing the risk of hypothermia and frostbite.

  • Infrastructure impacts, such as frozen pipes, are a significant concern.

Precautions for Residents

  1. Stay Indoors: Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.

  2. Prepare for Power Outages: Keep emergency supplies like flashlights and blankets on hand.

  3. Dress in Layers: Minimize exposure to the cold to prevent frostbite.

  4. Check on Neighbors: Ensure the elderly and vulnerable have access to heat and supplies.

Final Outlook

This winter storm has blanketed New Jersey with widespread snow, prompting emergency measures and warnings across the state. As temperatures drop dramatically, residents should brace for an extended period of dangerous cold weather. Keep monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and local authorities for the latest forecasts and advisories.
